Sourceforge educational software

I have a 2 year-old son, and I will definitely encourage him to use some of these educational software one of these days. It combines an easy-to-use interface, fun sound effects, and an encouraging cartoon mascot who guides children as they use the program.

Kids are presented with a blank canvas and a variety of drawing tools to help them be creative. Get TuxPaint! Canorus is a free music score editor. Note that Canorus is still in early stage of development and not nearly all the features are implemented yet! This means that the program source code is available to public, anyone is welcome to research how the program works, participate in its development, freely distribute the program and spread the word! Get Canorus! The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions.

Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over , stars, or even beyond the galaxy.

All movement in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across.

A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit. Celestia is expandable. Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. As an adult this accent did not bother me but children who have not been exposed to heavy accents might have a difficult time understanding.

I think GCompris could be great in a public library setting or a school media library. Again, I think that public libraries need to offer more software options to entice children to learn about computers and their functions. Childsplay is another children's educational software option offered on sourceforge.

In fact, I found Childsplay to be rather dull compared to GCompris. Children can also go to websites such as nickjr. GCompris does a wonderful job at touching on a variety of educational topics for young children. The JumpStart series is another set of educational software options that parents can buy for their children. I would definitely offer this product in a library where young children frequent , if only just to test it to see how the children respond to the software.

It's open source, it's free, so if it turns out to be unpopular you can simply take uninstall the program. GraphCalc for Students. Scenario: A Teen comes into your library to work on homework and realize that they forgot their TI graphing calculator in their locker at school.

The school is locked so how are they going to finish their homework? Solution: Luckily, the librarians have thought ahead and downloaded the GraphCalc program from sourceforge.

From their website one can see that GraphCalc is five years old, however, it works and is a free alternative for students who cannot afford other options. GraphCalc has the same functions as a TI graphing calculator with a few perks. It offers a 3-D graphing option so that students can fully understand their mathematical equations.

There is also an equation solving option. The insert tab at the top has different mathematical functions listed and the user can scroll through and enter the function they need automatically into the computing area.

To find points located on the graph the user needs only to point their mouse in the desired position. One fallback to this program, it is not portable. Unless you have a netbook it would be difficult to carry this graphing calculator around with you. It is costly to replace one. I would recommend GraphCalc for a public library setting where Junior High to High School students come in to do their homework. The Tech Edvocate.
