Windows 8 games gone

Restart the computer into Normal Mode. Check Event log to view if any error was logged. The last time, it happened just after I deleted browsing history and closed Internet Explorer. However, I have not been able to duplicate it. I tried deleting browser history, deleting e-mail messages in Windows Live Mail and emptying the recycle bin. Once, the game icons stopped functioning--nothing happened after clicking on them. I rebooted the computer, and the icons were gone.

Now, when they disappear, I can copy them back to the desktop folder, but I then have to rearrange the icons, as they're in random positions on the desktop. Since I originally posted the comment Once, I observed my game icons disappear when I "right clicked" the desktop and selected refresh. I copied the game icons back into the desktop folder and could not duplicate the error. I have been having the same problem. The first time I discovered that the icons had also disappeared from the Games folder in the start menu, so I had to create new shortcuts by searching for the games themselves.

The second time I was not able to find the games by searching the computer. It was as if all games associated with my created shortcuts had vanished. For instance, FreeCell was nowhere to be found. I used the System Restore program to get the games and the icons back by resetting the computer to yesterday's settings, but this problem is annoying. Has Microsoft addressed this issue yet? This is a Windows 7 bug. The problem is an inconsistancy between system file shortcuts and the system maintenence program.

The shortcuts Windows 7 creates for these system files do not include a full file specification. When you copy a shortcut for a system file including games from the start menu it has some sort of system name instead of the file specification most shortcuts have.

It's now replaced by Microsoft Family Safety , which is integrated with Microsoft accounts, gives you a web-based administration console, emails you reports about your children's internet use if you like, and adds many other new features.

The transparent, glass-like Windows 7 theme is also gone. You can get some transparency with a tool like Aero8Tuner , but don't bother. This doesn't work very well and, even if it did, Microsoft removed the blur effect so it's not as slick-looking as it is in Windows 7. Microsoft went out of their way to strip the Windows Aero theme engine out of Windows 8.

The Windows Classic theme has been removed. You can approximate it by using a user-created Windows Classic theme , but it's nowhere near the same. This theme is essentially a tweaked version of the High Contrast theme, as many elements of the default theme can't be tweaked.

You can also install a variety of other interesting third-party themes for Windows 8 if you don't like the included theme.

This requires overriding the protection against installing third-party themes on Windows 8, just as it did on Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Do you depend on another feature that's missing in Windows 8?
